Growing Up

Growing up is silly, actually so silly. In high school I would cherish the nostalgia that I watched on TV, with shows that tugged at my heart strings and characters that so cleverly made a way into your heart. Before you knew it, it was the last episode and Netflix was asking you, “What do you want to watch next?” While I was familiar with that nostalgia on a television screen, I found it difficult to fathom that I could experience the comfort those characters brought me… because after all, TV isn’t reality, there’s no way real life could be THAT good!

I grew up in the same small town and was around the same people since I was in kindergarten, so I wasn’t fully convinced on the whole “sisters for life” bit. But when I first joined Chi Omega my freshman year, the feeling I felt was a mixture of sparkly and serendipity. I knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be. This feeling was truly personified by the beautiful friendships I made. Walking into a space where you could be exactly who you were and be celebrated for it was not what I expected out of college, but I was so happy I found it.

What started out as meeting up for lunch because we had a similar schedule, carpooling with a neighbor, or saying yes to plans with someone you just met, turned into my best friendships. We’ve celebrated the biggest of wins and shared our lowest moments. From gate dates, making Tik Toks in the RCR with no shame, and even visiting each other in our hometowns, the small moments of connection with these amazing girls have set the foundation for lifelong friendships.

So as I approach my senior year, a quote that I often remember that is sooo niche (not) is from Andy in The Office: “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them.” This quote has always been at the back of my mind, but it has been a great reminder before I start my final year. I will cherish every chapter meeting, every Pasta Monday, every fro-yo Wednesday, every date function, and every moment that I get to spend being in a place I love with the people that I love. I am ever so thankful that I found my forever people at Chi Omega and that not only will I go through life with them, but I will also be able to grow in life because of them.
